open concept dining
The open concept kitchen at the heart of the home adds to the crisp clean feeling found throughout the house. The white cabinets topped with the dark soapstone counters are reminiscent of beach homes out east. The contrast in colors is mirrored by the dual height work stations found throughout the kitchen.
Accessibility is so important in the kitchen. Many of the modifications go unnoticed, but not unappreciated. The roll under sink is hidden with a custom made panel curtain of ivory and black fabric. The shallow stainless sink allows the user to roll under and access the Kohler faucet at the back of the sink. The faucet has a built in spray feature to make it easier for the user. Kohler also offers accessibility at the cook top. The Kohler pot filler allows the user to fill large pots on the cook top without having to move awkwardly across the kitchen.
Each of the appliances were selected for ease of use. The oven is set higher than a standard oven so a wheelchair user could roll underneath to retrieve items. A convection microwave oven is found at the other side of the kitchen for added convenience. The double drawer dishwasher is easier to load and unload because it does not have a large door creating an obstacle. A four foot turning radius is also built into the space for added wheelchair user comfort.
The eating area is located just behind the kitchen. The peninsula counter top acts as a resting stop or push along area for large serving dishes. The peninsula also provides additional seating for informal dining. The antique table is raised to allow for a wheelchair user to comfortable roll under to join other diners seated at the table. The Fisher Island chandelier above the table was donated by Forecast Lighting.
